Encouraging Open and Positive Communication

Course Description:

The field of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) faces unprecedented challenges, including dwindling resources, changes through WIOA, and uncertainties surrounding federal programs. Meanwhile, consumers of VR services are also experiencing their own stresses, such as concerns over Social Security, healthcare, financial hardship, and the experience of disability. The intersection of these stresses can impact communication within the client-counselor relationship.

In this session, we delve into the pitfalls of casual communication, especially under stress, and practice methods to enhance communication styles for more effective interactions.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Reflective Listening: Gain insight into how reflective listening can lead to a deeper understanding of the underlying messages in a person's words.
  • Recognize Internal Biases: Identify and understand internal biases, their origins, and their influence on interactions with others.
  • Practice Scenarios: Engage in practical exercises to apply learned skills. Participants will evaluate scenarios to determine how different responses can either escalate discord or foster productive, positive conversations with clients.

Certificate / CRC Credit 1.5:

Upon completion of the course, you will be prompted to take a brief quiz. After passing the quiz, you will receive a Certificate of Completion or 1.5 CRC credits.

This course is designed to equip professionals with the tools needed to navigate and improve communication dynamics within the VR field, ultimately fostering better client-counselor relationships and enhancing overall effectiveness.
