A Taste of Motivational Interviewing (2024)

Course Description:

The Taste of Motivational Interviewing (MI) course provides an overview of the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based conversational set of skills that helps people resolve ambivalence and become more internally motivated to make a behavior change. Motivational Interviewing is therefore an essential and valuable intervention tool for people working in Vocational Rehabilitation. Each MI concept is introduced through casual dialogue to make the concepts user-friendly. This course aims to:

  • Introduce the 'Spirit' of MI in order to illustrate how MI conversations should feel.
  • Describe the foundational 'Skills' of MI to provide a launching point for skill development.
  • Describe the four 'Processes' of MI to show how to apply some of the MI skills within a larger conversational strategy.

Each MI concept is visually diagrammed to illustrate how the different elements fit together. Research studying how people best learn Motivational Interviewing indicates that it often requires in-person practice and follow-up feedback for people to develop and sustain MI skills. This course is meant to provide a launching point from which the process of in-person training, practice, and skill development can occur.
